For information, this bridge collapsed on November 26, 2011 and was rebuilt at the same place with a different design.

(Doc: PUPR)

Name of the bridge: Tenggarong Bridge with the official name of Kutai Kartanegara ing Martadipura Bridge.

Location: Tenggarong, Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Coordinates: 0°26′39.96″S,117°0′10.37″E

Crossing: Mahakam River (connecting Tenggarong City and Samarinda City)

Bridge Type: Suspension bridge (old bridge) and tied arch bridge (new bridge)

Owner: Kutai Kartanegara Public Works Department (PU)

Executing Contractor: PT.Hutama Karya (HK) (First Construction and Second Construction)

Design Consultant: PT.Perentjana Djaja (First Construction) and PT.Adhiyasa Desico (Second Construction)

Total bridge length: 710 meters

Main span: 270 meters

Distance to the ground: 15 meters (from the roadway to the highest tide level)

First construction: August 17, 1995–2001 (collapsed in 2011)

Second construction: April 10, 2013–2015

The bridge, which crosses the Mahakam River, is the longest main span suspension bridge of its class in Indonesia.

(Doc: Kutai Kartanegara Goverment)

On August 17, 1995, the bridge was built by the Kutai Kartanegara Public Works Office with the design consultant PT Perentjana Djaja using a suspension bridge type and the implementing contractor PT Hutama Karya (HK) with a total contract value of Rp 104 billion, consisting of four packages, and completed in 2001.

On November 26, 2011, the bridge collapsed due to a break in the vertical suspension cable (hanger), resulting in a structural failure that caused the road and truss section to fall, leaving the main cable and 2 bridge towers.

Design Failure Hypothesis

Based on the facts found in the field, it shows that the fall of the bridge truss together with the vertical suspension cable (hanger) occurred due to the design failure of the vertical suspension cable connecting tool (clamps and saddles) connected to the main cable. The shape and construction details of the vertical cable connector to the main cable (clamps and saddle) are as follows:

Because there is one loose connector, the other connectors will receive a greater load until they finally exceed their maximum load, causing all the connectors to break together and release the load, namely the truss (frame), and the road falls.

There are several possibilities that can cause the structure to fail, including:

1. Poor maintenance of the bridge, which causes the structure of the vertical cable suspension devices to not function properly and the possibility of early damage is not detected.

2. Fatigue in the construction materials of the VSD due to design errors in the selection of materials or frequent overloading of the design (overloading), which accelerates the process of strength degradation.

3. The quality of the construction materials used to connect the hanging cable to the main cable does not meet the specifications and design standards.

4. Procedural errors in the implementation of construction maintenance or errors in the preparation of operational standards and planned construction maintenance.

5. Possible deviation from civil engineering rules in the design because the construction of the connecting device (saddle and clamp unit) should be stronger than the suspension cable connected to the main cable.

6. Design error in determining the type of material / material for vertical suspended cable connecting devices (clamps and saddles) made of cast iron / cast iron (cast iron) or error in determining the type or strength of the tool.

In this case, the implementing contractor, namely PT.Hutama Karya (HK), was not dragged into the general prosecution for the collapse of Kutai Kartanegara ing Martadiputra Bridge because PT.Hutama Karya (HK) claimed that they had no involvement in the project, they were only the implementing contractor, not the design consultant or the one who designed the bridge. The one who designed the bridge was PT.Perentjana Djaja.

However, PT Perentjana Djaja, as the design consultant, also said that all the plans were correct and had even been tested beforehand, and that there was no possibility of the construction failing.

In this case, many related parties blamed each other for the collapse of the bridge, but the trial of this case managed to drag 3 important officials related to the project, namely 2 officials from the Kutai Kartanegara Public Works Office (PU) as the Budget User Authority (KPA) and the Technical Implementation Officer (PPTK) as well as the Project Manager of PT Bukaka Tehnik Utama as the Maintenance Executive.

Based on the information obtained, the 3 defendants in the bridge case were sentenced by the prosecutor to 1 year and 8 months or 20 months.

On April 10, 2013, the reconstruction of Kutai Kartanegara ing Martadiputra Bridge was carried out by PT Adhiyasa Desico as the planning consultant and PT.Hutama Karya (HK) as the implementing contractor using the tied arch bridge type again with a development value of 191 billion.

Counting from 2013 to this year 2022, this bridge has lasted 9 years and hopefully this bridge is as planned with a plan life of 100 years.
